About the project:
The Youth Participatory Lab is an innovative project that brings young people aged 15–29 to the center of climate policy planning for cities. Through research, experimentation, and creative methods - ranging from comics and theater games to digital storytelling - young people don’t just hear about climate change; they actively participate in shaping solutions and proposals for more sustainable cities.

Within a framework of multiple crises—climate, social, and democratic—the need for participatory and equitable planning is more urgent than ever. Young people are the ones who will experience the consequences of climate change the most. They are also the ones who have the creativity, energy, and knowledge to contribute meaningfully to solutions. Through collaboration with young people from diverse backgrounds, a network for research and experimentation shall be developed, promoting participatory and sustainable urban development with a meaningful social and political impact.
The activities are organized around two complementary axes:
1 — The Neighborhood as a Field of Action
Young people actively participate in the planning of their neighborhood, addressing the impacts of climate change and environmental inequalities from the most immediate and experiential perspective. The neighborhood becomes a laboratory for ideas and proposals that are brought to local and national policymakers.
2 — Digital Tools and Artistic Creation
Contemporary digital platforms and artistic methods—from interactive digital storytelling to theatrical games and comics — are utilized to enhance young people’s knowledge and equip them with communication tools that make policies on climate resilience and justice understandable,
engaging, and democratic.

The Youth Participatory Lab is primarily implemented in Athens and Ioannina, two of the 100 EU cities participating in the mission for climate neutrality, with a particular focus on communities in Western Attica that face significant environmental and social inequalities.

What do we want to achieve?
1. Creating an active community of young people
for climate planning
2. Promoting participation and
social justice
3. Developing skills, empowering, and
connecting young citizens
4. Developing new methods of collaborative design
5. Strengthening sustainable development policies and
environmental policy
Key actions:
The implementing organization is Participatory Lab, which since 2020 has been bringing together scientists, government agencies, researchers, and professionals for the participatory planning of cities.
Today, it has over 800 members, has organized two international conferences and has carried out a wide range of initiatives related to democratic and participatory planning, sustainable urban development, and the adaptation of cities to climate change.
