Description

Two years ago, the first conference brought together over 300 local and international participants, marking a significant gathering of scientists, scholars, practitioners, and representatives from the local and central administration in Greece. This conference focused on participatory design and planning and served as a catalyst for initiating discussions on citizen participation and consultation in spatial development and planning. Additionally, it facilitated networking among individuals and institutions with a shared interest in democratic and inclusive policy-making processes for the city, environment, and society.

Now, after a two-year hiatus, the conference returns with the intention of continuing and advancing the debate. While maintaining a core emphasis on participatory planning and citizen engagement, the conference's focal point shifts towards the contemporary city. It aims to comprehend, identify, map, and showcase urban transformations, inequalities, and contradictions. Moreover, it seeks to highlight explorations and experiments centered around policy co-production and participatory planning projects. These endeavors aim to alter the current state of the city, housing, and everyday life, ultimately working towards social and environmental justice.

Presently, urban challenges have become increasingly urgent, leading to the growing relevance of discussions surrounding participatory, inclusive planning, and democratic governance. The compounding effects of the pandemic, geopolitical turmoil, energy crisis, deprivation, economic crisis, and climate crisis have deepened urban inequalities and heightened the vulnerability of urban populations. These circumstances present new responsibilities and define new areas of action for researchers, professionals engaged in spatial development, planning, and design, as well as public agencies and institutions responsible for implementing relevant policies.

The second Participatory Lab conference aims to foster interdisciplinary discussions by encouraging the exchange of views and experiences. It welcomes research approaches, planning practices, and artistic experiments within the following main themes:

Συνοπτική Περιγραφή
1. Public Space

Indicative fields: Architecture and Urban Design, Regeneration, Urban Mobility-Walkability, Urban Commons

2. Environment and Climate Crisis

Indicative fields: Impacts of climate change, Urban Green, Biodiversity, Green and Blue Infrastructure, Landscape

3. Socio-spatial Inequalities and Spatial Justice

Indicative fields: Social and environmental inequalities and exclusions, Housing crisis, Energy poverty, Gender inequalities, Social movements

4. Urban Development and Governance

Indicative fields: Institutional Framework, Austerity and unequal distribution of resources, Local Governance, European Policies, Sustainable Development Strategies

In conclusion, the conference aims to broaden the debate on these issues while bridging the
gap between research contributions and real-life field experiences involving the application
of participatory processes and tools. Additionally, it seeks to connect with institutional policy
implementation. To achieve these objectives, the conference process itself will strive for
greater inclusion and participation through a combination of papers and posters, round
tables, presentations, participatory workshops, and plenary discussions.
